The "Pyramid House" was a Tofino landmark — one of those 1970s originals with a personality so strong it outlasted its usefulness. By the time its owners came to us, the beloved rental had reached the end of its practical life. The vision was clear: honour the site, reimagine the building, and create a contemporary vacation home worthy of one of BC's most spectacular coastlines.
The project came with a regulatory puzzle at its centre. The original three-storey form was non-conforming under current height regulations — meaning a straight rebuild wasn't possible. Rather than accept a two-storey replacement, a variance was negotiated with the local building authority: by lowering the roofline to meet the height limit, the three-storey section of the original house could be retained. The result is a home that keeps the vertical presence of the original while meeting today's regulations.
The existing structure was demolished to the second floor, and everything above was rebuilt as a crisp contemporary home designed around the reason anyone comes to Tofino — the ocean. A reverse floor plan places the main living areas at the top, where the views are widest and the light is best. Every level opens onto decks that face the water, so whether you're cooking, sleeping, or just watching the weather roll in off the Pacific, the ocean is always part of the room.
Built for a young and growing family, this is a place designed to be enjoyed fully and remembered forever.
