Some of the best design briefs are also the simplest. An aging couple, ready to pass the family home to their children, wanted to stay close without being in the way. The solution was a single-level coach house at the rear of the property — a home scaled and designed for the next chapter, with everything they need and nothing they don't.
Two bedrooms, a garage, and a deck oriented toward the main house. That last detail is the one that matters most. From the deck, the couple can watch their grandchildren playing in the yard — close enough to be part of daily life, with just enough of their own space to make it sustainable for everyone.
The single-level layout was a deliberate choice for aging-in-place, designed to be as comfortable and practical in twenty years as it is today. No stairs, no compromises, no reason to ever have to move again.
Extended family living done right — not just as a practical arrangement, but as a design outcome worth being proud of.
